RENEWABLE WORLD NEPAL EARTHQUAKE APPEAL

The recent natural disaster in Nepal on 25th April 2015 has caused serious damage to the fragile infrastructure of the rural communities in Nepal.

Currently at just under £12 million of the £30 million target, Renewable World are calling for any contributions that you could give to help rebuild the lives of those affected by the crisis.

Energy Managers Association (EMA)

The Energy Managers Association (EMA) was set up by Lord Redesdale (CEO) in 2012 and represents Energy Managers across all industries.

Their priority is to improve the position of energy management experts, their profession and act as their united voice. They have a demand rather than a supply side focus, with energy efficiency being the key driver. To achieve these objectives, the EMA runs a number of initiatives: the Low Energy Company (LEC) scheme, Schools’ Energy Awareness training and Utilities & Compliance Assurance Body (UCAB). The EMA also trains candidates to become approved and registered ESOS Lead Assessors.

At the Eco Technology Show the EMA will be launching the Low Energy Company (LEC) Stage 3 Training Programme – a training programme intended for candidates who are interested to become energy managers, those re-skilling from other professions, and those newly appointed energy managers.

Find out more about energy management at the Eco Technology Show with the EMA talk about LEC on Thursday. See all of Thursday's Talks here.

Ecosoft Water

With 60% of the UK population living in hard water areas, the UK is an obvious market for water softening technology. British Water estimate that just 1 mm of limescale results in a 10% decrease in the energy efficiency of an appliance, making hard water a major sustainability challenge.  Bristol-based SME Ecosoft have discovered a chemical-free, energy-free solution to this challenge.

The technology itself is incredibly simple. A specifically designed alloy creates an electro-chemical reaction, changing the structure and behaviour of the minerals in the water removing their ability to stick to surfaces and cause limescale.  The alloy is formed into fins which create a turbulent flow of water, therefore maximising the effectiveness of the reaction. This effect can not only prevents limescale but can remove existing limescale.

"The system is entirely passive. The alloy never needs replacement, and no salts or chemicals are involved and it requires no energy to run, making it a robust and sustainable solution to the challenge of hard water" says Samantha Mant from Ecosoft.

April Newsletter #2 - Energy Efficiency at The Eco Technology Show

Energy Efficiency at The Eco Technology Show

The simplest case for being more energy-efficient is saving money. Even the simplest of measures to improve energy efficiency can have a substantial impact on the costs of a business. UK businesses could collectively save over £400 million a year just by taking steps to improve the efficiency of hot water boilers, according to the Carbon Trust. In the UK, the business case for saving energy is clear even before any remedial action is taken, because we pay tax on every unit of energy we use, in the form of VAT and the Climate Change Levy (CCL). The benefits go further than the purely financial though. There is also the need to follow mandatory legislation and the reputational benefits a business can earn from being seen to be green.

One of our main focuses at the Eco Technology Show is energy efficiency for businesses and the public sector.

Our exhibitors include a mix of established energy efficiency businesses and new pioneering companies, including 4ecoBimble SolarBri-tekBritish GasEnergy Saving TrustPlanet Feed and Sussex Eco Heating. Find out about all of our exhibitors in our Exhibitor Directory.

Eco Transport

Actor, writer, comedian and TV presenter Robert Llewellyn plans to dispel once and for all myths about electric vehicles at this year’s Eco Technology Show. Among the myths that Robert seeks to put to rest are that EVs take forever to charge, are liable to run out of power miles from a charging point, cost a fortune to buy and another fortune to replace the battery when its range drops to half. Instead, he will argue at the Eco Technology Show, we need to shelve our prejudices and doubts and think seriously about electric vehicles.

With a cost per mile of just two pence or less, it is understandable that the majority (89%) of Nissan LEAF owners recently surveyed reported significant savings of £200-250 per month.

Eco Technology Show Director Nicola Gunstone says:

“We see this as an important investment as some of the greatest ideas come from start-up businesses, which sometimes require support to get them off the ground. Plus it means Show visitors will get to see the very latest ideas and concepts that otherwise they might miss out on, so it’s a win-win situation!”

Energy Saving Trust Tips

How much could you save by draught-proofing?
Draught-proofing around windows and doors could save you £25 to £50 per year. Draught-free homes are comfortable at lower temperatures – so you’ll be able to turn down your thermostat. This could save you another 10 per cent off your heating bill. Draughts happen where there are unwanted gaps in the construction of your home, and where openings are left uncovered.
You’ll find draughts at any accidental gap in your home that leads outside, such as:
  • windows
  • doors – including keyholes and letterboxes
  • loft hatches
  • electrical fittings on walls and ceilings
  • suspended floorboards
  • pipework leading outside
  • ceiling-to-wall joints

On 27th January 2014, the Government rolled out a new scheme designed to help small businesses afford private sector suppliers' advice regarding how best to grow their business. This is a joint programme between the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Behavioural Insights Team in Cabinet Office.
If your business is eligible, you will be granted a £2000 Growth Voucher that you can use against one of five support areas:
